    ABOUT US

The Citizens for Humane Animal Treatment of Wakulla, Inc., known as CHAT of Wakulla is a not-for-profit, charitable corporation.  We are a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our Articles of Incorporation were filed on August 8, 2001. Click on the Bylaws and Articles for more information. We are committed to improving the health, safety, and well-being of domesticated animals in our community. Our roots are in the former Wakulla Humane Society, an organization that had been active for over 30 years. Our activities include: shelter volunteer work, fostering dogs and cats, fund-raising, animal rehabilitation, spay/neuter campaigns and education activities.

Wakulla is one of the fastest growing counties in Florida. Growth brings problems of lost, stray, nuisance, or vicious animals, as well as pet overpopulation.  Whether you enjoy fund raising, animal rehabilitation, spending time with lonely dogs and cats, or simply want to make a monetary contribution, your help is greatly appreciated.

The Board of Directors for 2008:

President, Susan Yelton

Vice-President, Heide Clifton

Treasurer, Anne Van Meter

Secretary, Nancy Wood

Director/Fundraising, Nancy Krzycki

Director/Membership, Kristie Revell

Director/Health, Dr. Faith Hughes

Director/Adoptions, Cathy Sherman

Director/Foster, Glenda McCarthy

CHAT receives monies through the adoptions, donations, benefits and memberships and Grants. We also make some monies through the sale of leads, collars and carriers.  The County budget is limited and CHAT is trying to fill the gap.  All of our funds are used for the benefit of the animal shelter. We pay for all the dog food at the shelter. We purchase equipment such as a slide-in-unit for the Animal Control Truck, a horse trailer, stainless steel cages, washing machines and many other items.  CHAT recently had a barn built for horses, goats, sheep, pigs and other livestock that enters the facility.

     ABOUT THE WAKULLA ANIMAL SHELTER

.

Wakulla County Animal Shelter

CHAT of Wakulla is the supporting organization for the Wakulla Animal Shelter, located at 1 Oak Street, Crawfordville, FL 32327. You can reach the shelter at 926-0890 or 926-0891.  Shelter hours are as follows:

Sunday:  1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Monday:  CLOSED

Tuesday - Saturday:  10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

An average of 120 dogs and cats can be housed at the shelter. Sadly, some of these animals have to be euthanized.  Every animal admitted to the shelter receives medical care, a warm safe environment in which to heal and learn to trust, and much love to aid in preparation for becoming adoptable.  The programs are made possible by the county and caring people who provide funding which keeps the doors open.

Stray animals should be reported and found animals should be dropped off at the shelter.  Some anxious owner might be waiting to be reunited with his pet. Drop off cages for dogs and cages for cats are available at the entrance of the Shelter for after-hours use.  If you lost an animal, please contact the Shelter immediately to fill out a lost and found report.  To report vicious, nuisance or abused domestic animals please contact the Shelter at 926-0890.
